The Real Tea on Budgeting for a remodel: What You Need to Know Before You Spend a Dime.

So, you’re ready to turn your bathroom into a personal oasis? A spa-like retreat where you can soak or steam away stress and start every morning in luxury? Love that for you! 😍 But before we start picking out dreamy tiles and statement vanities, let’s talk about the budget. (Yep, the “B” word.) The biggest mistake homeowners make? Underestimating what it takes to bring their vision to life. Let’s make sure you’re not one of them.

Tips for Smart Budgeting and understanding your budget

  • Plan for Hidden Costs: Always set aside at least 10-20% of your budget for unexpected expenses.

  • Your budget will generally fall into two categories:

    • Design Fees – What you’ll pay your designer for their expertise, project management, and sourcing.

    • Furnishings & Materials – Everything from furniture and lighting to fabrics and accessories.

*Each project is unique, but having a guideline for mid to high-end design budgets can make planning much easier.

Step 1: Get Real About Your Goals

Before we even talk numbers, ask yourself: What am I trying to achieve? Are you looking for a full-scale bathroom remodel, or are you seeking a refresh to add trendy lighting and decor. The scope of your project will determine how deep into your pockets you’ll need to go.

Step 2: The Budget Breakdown

Now that we know what we’re doing, let’s talk about how much you should set aside. Here’s a quick guide to help you gauge your investment:

Step 3: Prioritize & Plan

If those numbers have you clutching your pearls, don’t panic! A great designer (cough, like me 😉) will help you create a game plan that fits your lifestyle and your wallet.

Step 4: Be Honest About What You Can Afford

The worst thing you can do? Start a project without a solid understanding of your financial comfort zone. If you're working with a smaller budget—say, $5,000 - $10,000 for a bathroom remodel—focusing on retail brands like Home Depot, Wayfair, and IKEA can help you create a stylish, comfortable space while staying within budget. Thoughtfully mixing pieces from these retailers allows you to maximize your investment and bring personality into your bathroom. And that’s okay! Keep in mind that if you’re also planning to work with a designer, design fees should be factored into your overall budget to ensure a smooth and well-planned experience! Just be real with yourself—and your designer—so we can maximize every dollar.

Step 5: Trust the Process

Interior design is an investment—in your home, your happiness, and your everyday life. When done right, it not only adds function and beauty but also increases your home’s value. Work with someone who respects your budget but also educates you on what’s realistic.
